Why I hate AT&T

This is the story of 4 analog POTS lines that I ordered from AT&T for our new Chicago office. It’s a fairly small office…about 14 users.  I have a brand spankin’ new NEC DMR that ties to the corporate headquarters NEC NEAX 2000 over a VPN for VOIP. Both sites are on Cogent’s backbone with 100mb/s fiber connections on each side. Sweet! Right?  All I need to complete this awesome setup is a few analog lines for local inbound/outbound calling. So, who do you get a few POTS lines from in Chicago? Well, AT&T appears to have a monopoly on this. I could find no other telephone company that could provide this service to my building. From my experience this is common in big cities…Verizon owns all the copper in DC, AT&T owns all the copper in Chicago. If you don’t like these companies, can’t get good service or just want competitive pricing you have no recourse. You have no choices. For these reasons local copper monopolies own your life and soul if you need their services.  This is a bad thing. All monopolies are bad things. This is why:
